"We are going to create a campus environment in the middle of the lot that will be the new center of gravity. This project is a smart thing to do . . . a good thing for all of us, and a good thing for the environment and for our community. We are proud to have our worldwide headquarters here in Culver City. And with this project, we are committed to staying here for generations to come."
- Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures Co-Chairman

Background
The Sony Pictures Entertainment lot in Culver City, California, dating from 1915, has been home to F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Wicked Witch of the West, Spider-Man, and countless innovations in motion picture history from silent films to color to digital special effects. Sony's latest innovation isn't on film: the company's new solar energy project, designed and built by EI Solutions, adds a new measure of green efficiency for Sony as part of a major consolidation of its production operations.

The Challenge
Sony Pictures' overall challenge was to improve efficiency and save money by consolidating personnel and operations from several locations around Los Angeles onto the historic Sony lot. The studio launched the construction project last fall with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The project is being undertaken by following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines established by the U.S. Green Building Council in order to help combat climate change and conserve natural resources. As part of that green effort, Sony asked EI Solutions to create a solar energy facility that would supply renewable, cost-effective electricity, respect the history and ambiance of the location, and help the company signify its commitment to the quality of California's environment.

The Smart Solution: Simple design, reliable results
Without disrupting Sony's operational execution or the ongoing 24/7 activity on the busy Culver City lot, EI Solutions designed and built a 232.96 kWp solar system with 1120 solar panels on the rooftop of the Jimmy Stewart Building. Sony started the project in October, 2007.

The Result
Sony's solar installation went active on February 29, 2008. The clean, renewable electricity generated from the installation will be used to offset electricity needs at the Culver City office facilities, and will be part of the comprehensive effort to make Sony's new center a green campus that serves the company's creative culture and bottom line for another century to come.
